When one is traveling on a budget, one of the first things that come to mind is that a person may be able to save some money on their accommodations by using a hostel. Hostels are a great choice for those who are looking for a safe and convenient place to stay at a reasonable price. What may be at the front of someone's mind, however is that a hostel is only an option for those who are young. They may not realize that hostels are a great choice for everyone who wants to enjoy the thrill of traveling with the bare minimum and is looking to save a lot on their accommodations. One may be wondering if there are any type of restrictions as to who can stay at a hostel, there are in some instances.
Most hostels do not allow locals to stay at the inn since they try to reserve as much space as possible for out of town travelers. These facilities will often ask for some type of proof that you are not local to the area before they will allow you to take a space.
There are usually not any age restrictions, but this is not always the case, in some cases you may specifically hear the term "youth hostel". This generally means that they only provide space to people who are under the age of 25 or 26 years old. There are also times you may hear the term "men's hostel" or "boy's hostel" these terms mean that the facility is only able to accommodate male guests because there are no separate facilities for sleeping or bathing for females. As the dorms in the hostels are often quite commonly open to nudity this is understandable. "Boys hostels" simply are labeled as such to imply that they are youth hostels for males only and therefore age limits will also apply. Generally there are accommodations for females traveling in the area nearby in the form of a "women's house". These are small inns which are reserved for female travelers. Rooms are often comfortable and generally house no more than four girls in real beds, rather than up to 12 men in a dorm using bunk beds at the hostel.
Some hostels require you to be a backpacker, biker, or some other traveler to stay. These types of hostels are intended to only accommodate a specific type of traveler who is generally alone, and will not be staying for more than two days. Generally they will have a maximum three day limit for stays. These "backpacker's hostels" are more common in smaller communities in central to Eastern Europe than in other parts of the world.
A hostel is a great way to save some money on your next trip. For the most part anyone can stay at a hostel while they are traveling, but there are some rare cases when there may be some restrictions in place. The best thing to do is to not only check the hostel out online, but to also call them and ask about any particular restrictions they may have.
